NEW YORK—Sibelco announced that Sibelco North America, Inc. has signed a Letter of Intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce for up to $56 million in funding under the CHIPS and Science Act to support R&D for the development and scaling of next-generation high-purity quartz (HPQ) processing and product technologies in the United States.
Covington advised Sibelco in connection with the Letter of Intent.
High-purity quartz is an essential raw material used in the production of quartz components that play a critical role in semiconductor manufacturing. The proposed funding would support Sibelco's continued innovation and research activities in the United States, advancing HPQ processing technologies, and strengthening reliable domestic capabilities for the production of semiconductor-grade HPQ.
Founded in 1872, Sibelco is a global leader in material solutions. Sibelco mines, processes and sells specialty industrial minerals – particularly high purity quartz, silica, clays, feldspathics and olivine – and is a leader in glass recycling.
The Covington team included J. D. Weinberg, Patrick Manchester, Michael Wagner, Ansgar Simon, David Fagan, Nikhil Gore, Peter Lichtenbaum, Peter Terenzio, and Lucas Cuatrecasas.
