LOS ANGELES/SAN FRANCISCO/WASHINGTON—Covington advised Mother Jones on its merger with the Center for Investigative Reporting as the organizations form a single nonprofit news outlet. The merger is expected to take effect early in 2024.
As a result of the merger, CIR will merge into the nonprofit that runs Mother Jones, the Foundation for National Progress, and the organizations will merge their boards, operating under the name The Center for Investigative Reporting. Mother Jones' editor-in-chief Clara Jeffery will lead the combined newsroom of more than 70 people. The outlet will strive to provide in-depth reporting across every platform where people get their news, from online and social media to video, radio, podcast, and print.
The Covington team advising Mother Jones included Denny Kwon, Ingrid Rechtin, Andy Nguyen, Christen Sewell, Luke McCartney, Rebecca Dalton and Marie Lavalleye.
