Four Covington Partners Named Law360 MVPs

WASHINGTON—Law360 has named four Covington partners as MVPs in their respective practice areas. The awards single out lawyers from across numerous practice areas based on their success in high-stakes litigation, complex global matters, and record-breaking deals.

The Covington lawyers recognized as Law360 MVPs are:

• Ray Biagini, Government Contracts. Mr. Biagini is widely recognized for his experience defending “contractors on the battlefield” in tort litigation. Mr. Biagini also has an extensive product liability prevention practice, particularly for military and civilian government contractors. In its profile, Law360 noted that Mr. Biagini's government contracts and litigation practice gave him the unique opportunity to conceive of and draft the core provisions of a major piece of tort reform legislation—the U.S. SAFETY Act—which protects homeland security providers and users from certain liabilities arising from a terror attack.

• Mark Plotkin, International Trade. Co-chair of the firm’s Aerospace, Defense, and National Security Industry Group, Mr. Plotkin is recognized as a preeminent role in advising companies on the various national security review processes undertaken by the U.S. government in connection with cross-border transactions, including reviews by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Law360 highlighted Mr. Plotkin’s CFIUS-related work, noting that he secured "U.S. government approval for a litany of billion-dollar overseas transactions with sensitive security implications" over the past year.

• Ben Razi, Trials. Mr. Razi, co-chair of Covington’s Commercial Litigation Practice Group, represents clients in high-stakes litigation and government enforcement matters. The publication praised Mr. Razi for obtaining numerous trial wins across a wide spectrum of legal sectors this year, and highlighted his victory in a rare civil forfeiture case against the U.S. government in the Southern District of New York.

• Jeremy Spector, Tax. Mr. Spector’s practice involves tax planning, IRS controversy work, and the structuring of corporate transactions, with particular emphasis on advising professional sports leagues and teams and on representing large taxpayers through the IRS audit, Fast Track, and Appeals processes. In its profile of Mr. Spector, Law360 praised his precedent-setting victory on behalf of the owners of the Boston Bruins at the U.S. Tax Court, which was the first major sports case to reach the court in two decades.
