Three Covington Partners Among Top 100 Women Lawyers in California

LOS ANGELES—Covington partners Robyn Polashuk, Clara Shin, and Sonya Winner have been named to the Daily Journal’s 2017 “Top 100 Women Lawyers” list, which recognizes the leading women lawyers in California who “try complex commercial disputes and put together industry-transforming deals.”
Managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office, Ms. Polashuk focuses on the licensing and distribution of television networks and programming content across a variety of platforms and business models. The Daily Journal notes the effect of new content consumption habits and technologies on Ms. Polashuk’s practice and highlights her representation of Fox Networks Group’s carriage agreement with “over-the-top” platform Sling TV, as well as her key advisory role in the National Football League’s negotiations to broadcast the NFL Network and RedZone on multiple platforms.
Based in the firm’s San Francisco office, Ms. Shin is recognized for two recent trial victories. The Daily Journal highlights Ms. Shin’s win for McKesson Corporation, in which she led a Covington team to victory in a trade secrets trial related to co-pay discount programs after she and the team arrived on the case only five months before trial. Facing the challenge of orienting the defense, Ms. Shin convinced the court to rule for McKesson on every issue and dismiss the plaintiff’s damages claim totaling half a billion dollars. The story also mentions Ms. Shin’s representation of Scottish Equity Partners for which she won a $34 million judgment in a software technology and cross-border earn-out dispute.
Ms. Winner, also resident in the San Francisco office, is co-chair of the firm’s Class Action Litigation Practice. The Daily Journal praises Ms. Winner for her work on high-stakes cases for clients across a range of different industries, from banking to pharmaceuticals to professional sports. The article notes, among other things, her role as defense counsel to the National Football League in a putative class action involving allegations by retired players involving pain medications, as well as her representation of Navient Solutions in multiple class actions involving disputed interest rates and fees on student loans.
