WASHINGTON—For the third consecutive year, The National Law Journal has named Covington to its “Pro Bono Hot List.” The law firms appearing on the 2020 Pro Bono Hot List were recognized for taking on “some of the biggest issues of our time.”
In its profile of the firm, The National Law Journal highlights Covington’s Pro Bono efforts in two significant matters. One matter involved securing a nationwide injunction prohibiting the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. The Commerce Secretary’s decision threatened a disproportionate undercount of certain demographic groups, which would have led to unequal legislative representation and unfair reductions in federal funding. Coordinating with parallel cases in other jurisdictions, we played a key role in reversing the Secretary’s action and protecting the integrity of the Census.
The Covington team that secured this injunction included Shankar Duraiswamy, Ben Duke, Dustin Cho, Dan Grant, Bianca Nunes, Tina Thomas, Karun Tilak, B.J. Altavater, Amee Frodle, Marianna Jackson, and Larry Hobel.
The other highlighted matter included representing a class of veterans in a case in which, for the first time in its history, the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims certified a class action and granted class wide relief to veterans experiencing delays by the VA in processing appeals of benefit denials. Achieving a historic class certification on behalf of veterans ensured that the benefit claims of the over 2,000 class members did not remain in procedural limbo.
