WASHINGTON—The Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless honored Covington as its “Outstanding Law Firm of the Year.” This award recognizes law firms that go above and beyond in supporting and furthering the mission and vision of the Legal Clinic.
The Legal Clinic highlighted the efforts of Covington lawyers to help preserve affordable housing in the District of Columbia and to address the criminalization of homelessness. Covington advises the Legal Clinic in representing a prospective class of homeless residents in negotiations with the District of Columbia concerning the constitutionality of its homeless encampment clearing procedures. In addition, the firm, along with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee, represents OneDC and individual tenants in fair housing matters related to the redevelopment of the Brookland Manor apartment complex.
The Washington Legal Clinic’s mission is to use the law to make justice a reality for those who struggle with homelessness and poverty. Combining community lawyering and advocacy to achieve its clients’ goals, the Legal Clinic’s staff and network of volunteer attorneys provide low barrier, comprehensive legal services at intake sites throughout the District of Columbia, helping clients to access housing, shelter, and life-saving services.
