Litigator of the Week Runners-Up and Shout-Outs: Covington Defends UCB's Nayzilam Patents in Bench Trial Win

A Covington team led by Alexa Hansen and Kaveh Saba earned a Litigator of the Week runner-up mention in AmLaw Litigation Daily for representing biopharmaceutical client UCB Inc. in a patent challenge from generic maker Cipla to the patents behind UCB's Nayzilam, a nasal spray for treating seizure clusters in epilepsy patients that generated $150.3 million in U.S. sales in 2025.

After a four-day bench trial held in 2023, U.S. District Judge Jennifer Hall in Delaware turned back Cipla's claims that UCB's patents were invalid as anticipated and obvious. The ruling means Cipla won't be able to launch its generic version of Nayzilam until the patents expire in January 2028.

The Covington team also included Eric Sonnenschein, John Veiszlemlein, Yale Fu, and George Pappas.
