Yan Luo’s commentary was included in a
Nikkei Asia article discussing how President Joe Biden’s recent executive order directing companies to share reports on safety tests of their artificial intelligence (AI) models is the latest move in a race between the U.S. and other governments to regulate AI. Yan commented on these efforts and what they mean for the future of AI regulation.
"We see all the governments -- the EU, U.S., China -- all the governments would take some form of interest in AI safety and want to know more about those AI systems. Somehow the government will need to have a process to collect those information, to analyze those information and to address the concerns," Yan said. She added that while some language used by the U.S. and China in their AI regulations might be similar in terms of gathering information from companies, "the underlying regulatory priority could be different.”
Yan also said that “it remains to be seen how the U.S. will enforce Biden's AI executive order on tech companies.”
