SAN FRANCISCO— The Recorder has named Covington partner John Hall a Lifetime Achievement Award honoree as part of its 2026 California Legal Awards. The California Legal Awards, presented by The Recorder, a premier California legal publication and part of ALM Media, celebrate the lawyers and law firms driving the state's dynamic legal landscape.
John is the chair of Covington's global Litigation practice and a former federal prosecutor with more than 40 years of courtroom experience. He represents some of the world's leading companies in their most challenging disputes, including Hewlett Packard, the National Football League, and TikTok. He has won precedent-setting rulings at trial and on appeal in several leading cases. Under his leadership, Covington's Litigation practice has grown to more than 800 litigators across the firm's offices worldwide.
Among his notable representations, John won a preliminary injunction for TikTok preventing the Trump Administration from banning the app only hours before the ban was set to take effect, prevailed in the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court for Chiquita in defeating thousands of Alien Tort Statute claims, and successfully challenged the Defense Department's blacklisting of Xiaomi Corporation from U.S. financial markets, a ruling that restored $10 billion to the company's market capitalization.
Over the course of his career, John has devoted thousands of hours to pro bono legal work, with a focus on protecting women's reproductive rights. In 2023, the Feminist Majority Foundation honored him with its Global Women's Rights Courage Award.
