PALO ALTO/WASHINGTON— Covington secured a victory for Netflix in Netflix Inc. v. CA Inc. et al., defeating patent infringement claims brought by Broadcom subsidiaries.
Following argument on March 12, 2026, Judge Edward M. Chen, Senior Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, held that Broadcom’s patent impermissibly attempted to claim an abstract idea, making it patent ineligible under the United States Supreme Court’s Alice framework — and therefore rendering the patent invalid. In turn, that finding left Broadcom without any valid claims in the action, as Netflix had previously invalidated more than 70 other claims at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The Covington team representing Netflix was led by Indranil "Indy" Mukerji, and included Lindsey Barnhart, Steve Marshall, Tarek Austin, Kaveh Saba, Adam Smith, and Scott Burger.
