Covington Named National Law Journal ESG and Community Impact Leader
October 21, 2022
WASHINGTON—The National Law Journal named Covington to its inaugural list of "ESG and Community Impact Leaders" at its annual 2022 Professional Excellence Awards. This award focused on legal leadership in the Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance field. Winners were chosen based on the impact of their legal initiatives on communities and stakeholders.
In its profile of the firm, The National Law Journal highlighted two recent matters, including representing power companies in the last term's landmark Supreme Court case, West Virginia v. United States Environmental Protection Agency. As Kevin Poloncarz stated in the profile, "Our clients argued alongside the EPA seeking to defend the scope of EPA's authority to regulate carbon pollution from power plants and obtaining a narrow ruling."
In addition, Covington helped The Nature Conservancy with efforts to conserve natural resources, including in its partnership with Amazon, which committed $100 million to invest in nature-based climate solutions, but wanted to ensure that projects adhered to rigorous social equity standards.
As Kevin stated, the most satisfying aspect of this work involved "helping sophisticated clients align their business objectives with broader social and environmental goals, in a way that positively impacts their employees, customers, suppliers, investors, and other stakeholders."
