WASHINGTONDamon Jones, who most recently served as Senior Vice President & General Counsel of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball franchise, has joined Covington’s Sports Practice in the Washington office.

Mr. Jones has more than 20 years of experience advising clients in sports, media, and entertainment matters. During his nearly 13 years with the Nationals, he represented the team in various corporate transactions, including deals involving media rights, sponsorships, merchandising, technology transfers, and other IP arrangements, as well as stadium/venue development, use, and lease agreements. He also managed and supervised domestic and international litigation regarding media rights, employment, breach of contract, bankruptcy, insurance, and other matters; criminal, civil, league, and internal investigations; and a wide variety of arbitrations and mediations, including player salary arbitrations.

“Damon’s in-house experience handling a wide spectrum of legal and business issues will bring significant value to our clients,” said Jeremy Spector, co-chair of Covington’s Sports Practice. “Over the past decade, he’s helped build the Nationals into one of the industry’s premiere franchises, and his combination of legal expertise, practical problem-solving skills, and knowledge of how leagues and clubs work will be beneficial to our sports industry clients.”

“Covington has long been recognized as a leader in the sports industry with a deep roster of leading lawyers,” said Mr. Jones. “The firm’s multi-disciplinary sports practice mirrors my own experience, and I’m excited for this new chapter in my career and look forward to joining this dynamic team.”

Mr. Jones is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara and Harvard Law School and more recently completed the advanced management program at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
