SAN FRANCISCO—The National Law Journal has named Covington to its “Pro Bono Hot List.” The 2018 special report recognizes 14 firms who “have taken on some of the biggest issues of our time.”
In its profile of the firm, The National Law Journal highlights Covington’s pro bono efforts, led by San Francisco partner Jeffrey Davidson, on behalf of the University of California challenging the federal government’s decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA provides 700,000 immigrants brought to the United States as children with the right to lawfully reside and work in the U.S. In January 2018, U.S. District Judge William Alsup of the Northern District of California granted a nationwide injunction barring the government from proceeding with the rescission, ruling that the Department of Homeland Security’s decision was arbitrary, capricious, and unlawful.
“To be in court standing up for 700,000 immigrants, I don’t know that there’s anything quite like that,” said Mr. Davidson. “For them, it’s not a legal case. It’s about whether they get to be Americans.”
The Covington team, with lawyers in the firm’s San Francisco and Washington office, included, in addition to Mr. Davidson, Mark Lynch, Alex Berengaut, Megan Crowley, and Mónica Ramírez Almadani.
