Former FTC Official Rejoins Covington

WASHINGTON—Laura Kim has joined Covington’s Advertising and Consumer Law and Data Privacy and Cybersecurity practices in Washington.
For more than a decade, Ms. Kim held a variety of roles in the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), including Assistant Director in two divisions, Chief of Staff to former Bureau Director Jessica Rich, and staff attorney. She also served as Attorney Advisor to former FTC Chairman William Kovacic.
Most recently, Ms. Kim served as Deputy Chief Enforcement Officer at the Department of Education, Federal Student Aid, where she supervised investigations and enforcement actions, as well as borrower defense and Clery Act compliance.
“Laura’s wide-ranging FTC experience will be an invaluable benefit to clients across a number of important industries,” said John Graubert, co-chair of the firm’s Advertising and Consumer Law Practice Group. “Not only is Laura knowledgeable in the advertising and marketing space generally, but she also brings significant experience in the areas of emerging technologies, healthcare, and energy and the environment.”
Prior to working at the FTC, Ms. Kim began her legal career as an associate in the Washington office of Covington. She earned her B.A. summa cum laude from Yale University and her J.D. from Harvard Law School.
