Paul Mertenskötter Quoted in Thomson Reuters Practical Law’s ESG Outlook Report

Paul Mertenskötter was featured in Thomson Reuters Practical Law’s annual report, ESG Outlook Spring Summer 2026: Practitioner Insights. His commentary on page 2 and 3 focuses on key developments in the simplification of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).

Paul highlighted that the proposed shift toward a more “top-down” approach to double materiality assessments (DMA) is likely to be one of the most consequential changes for corporate reporting teams. He noted that this approach allows companies to ground their assessments in their overall strategy and business model, rather than conducting a highly granular review of each individual impact, risk, or opportunity.

He further observed that more detailed, topic-level analysis would only be required where it could reasonably be expected to affect a company’s overall materiality conclusions—an adjustment that may significantly streamline the reporting process while maintaining meaningful disclosures.
