Jessica O’Connell’s commentary was included in an HBW Insight article exploring the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) rollout of new dietary ingredient notification requirements and whether the agency has enough resources to enforce compliance.
Regarding these concerns, Jessica states, “I think it’s always a pressing issue. One, it’s an issue of resources, and then two, the priorities with the resources that they have.”
“In the last years of the Biden administration, we saw a lot of discussion about priorities that didn’t include supplement enforcement priorities. It was a lot of discussion about food chemicals and nutrition initiatives, and those have really been the two pillars of what we’ve seen in the human foods program,” she adds. Jessica also notes that she “thinks some of it will be whether we see a change in priorities in the incoming administration and how they use those resources. I would be surprised if the resource is significantly changed absent user fees, or something like that, which I don’t think would happen.”
