China unveils draft Data Security Law

Yan Luo is quoted in Global Data Review regarding China’s proposed data law intended to protect national security and the development of the digital economy. Ms. Luo says the law marks “a step forward” in establishing a regulatory framework for data security in China. She notes that the proposal has a particular focus on the governance of “important data”, defined as data which could directly affect China’s national security, economic security, social stability, or public health and security if leaked. She adds that “many provisions of the draft remain vague and [there is a] lack of guidance on how they might be implemented in practice.”
