Abby Wright

Abby Wright is a member of the Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation Group with experience spanning almost two decades at the U.S Department of Justice. Abby served most recently as Deputy Director of the Civil Division, Appellate Staff where she supervised nationwide appellate civil litigation for the federal government, managing teams of attorneys handling complex litigation, including numerous emergency matters. As a line attorney, she personally handled a wide range of high-profile and politically sensitive matters, presenting oral argument in 40 cases before the courts of appeals, including courts sitting en banc. Abby also formerly served as a law clerk to Justice John Paul Stevens.

Abby’s significant litigation experience includes the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac bailout litigation; numerous healthcare-related appeals; complex tort litigation, including appeals arising from Hurricane Katrina; class-action litigation challenging the Bureau of Prisons’ response to COVID; transportation matters; and same-sex marriage and related litigation. During her time at the Department of Justice, Abby also advised and assisted numerous federal agencies on rulemaking and other proposed agency action, as well as provided training on best rulemaking practices and appellate advocacy. She also oversaw the process of delegating appeals to the United States Attorney’s Offices and other federal agencies, giving her a unique perspective on government appellate litigation nationwide.
