    As a member of the firm's Sports Practice Group, David Simon advises a wide range of clients on sports-related transactions, including some of the largest and most innovative transactions in the industry. David represents sports leagues, teams and owners, investors and other strategic partners in a variety of corporate and commercial transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments and related transactions, joint ventures, governance matters, financings and other commercial transactions.

    David has represented clients in connection with some of the largest team acquisitions and sales in the industry, including the acquisition of the Chicago White Sox, Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz, Sporting KC, Arizona Coyotes franchise and Kansas City Royals. In addition to those control sales, he has also been involved in numerous sales of minority interests across teams in the NBA, MLB, MLS and NWSL.

    In particular, David has regularly represented major U.S. professional sports leagues (including the National Basketball Association and the National Football League) in significant transactional and governance matters.

    • Bill Cosgrove in the Patrick Zalupski consortium in their acquisition of the Tampa Bay Rays.
    • Precourt Sports Ventures and the Austin FC MLS franchise in equity investment matters.
    • Mathew Ishbia in the acquisition of a controlling interest in the Phoenix Suns, Phoenix Mercury, and related assets.
    • Ryan Smith and Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) in the acquisitions of the Utah Jazz NBA franchise, the Arizona Coyotes NHL franchise (and relocation to Salt Lake City, Utah) and the Delta Center, and in related equity investment matters.
    • The United States Tennis Association in the sale of the Western & Southern Open, an ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament.
    • John Sherman and the Sherman Group in its acquisition of the Kansas City Royals from David Glass and his family.
    • The National Basketball Association in connection with the formation of (i) NBA Africa, an entity that conducts the league's business in Africa, including with respect to third party equity investments into the newly formed enterprise, and (ii) the Basketball Africa League, a partnership between the NBA and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).
    • Various emerging professional sports leagues in corporate, financing, commercial and governance matters.
    • Various minority investors in equity investments in NBA, MLB, MLS and NWSL teams.
