    Jad Khazem is a commercial litigator experienced in high-stakes civil litigation and appeals, with a focus on representing large corporate policyholders in insurance coverage disputes.  Through his work, Jad has helped his clients recover more than $1 billion to date.

    Jad has helped clients recover for a wide variety of underlying claims and losses, including mass tort claims, shareholder claims, government investigations, cyber claims, environmental cleanup, first-party property damage and business interruption, maritime claims, antitrust liabilities, and more.

    Jad is a seasoned trial-court and appellate advocate, and has also helped his clients successfully resolve coverage disputes through settlement negotiations and ADR.  He actively speaks, writes, and presents on complex insurance coverage issues.  Jad maintains a robust pro bono practice, which includes the representation of veterans, voting rights organizations, and whistleblowers.

    Prior to joining the firm, Jad clerked for Judge Henry F. Floyd on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.  Jad has been repeatedly recognized by his peers as a Washington DC Super Lawyers "Rising Star."

    High-Dollar First-Party Claims

    • Achieved a highly successful near-$250 million settlement on behalf of a major U.S. Virgin Islands resort’s property damage/business interruption claim, one of the largest arising out of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Secured settlement after winning multiple forum battles, obtaining accelerated litigation schedule, and prevailing on key spoliation motions.
    • Obtained a substantial first-party coverage settlement for owner of a large Puerto Rican luxury hotel devastated by Hurricane Maria. Secured outcome shortly before trial after prevailing on key summary judgment and insurer bad faith rulings.
    • Aggressively litigated a complex insurance coverage, fraud, and broker malpractice lawsuit in the Southern District of New York, in connection with a glass manufacturer’s tornado property damage and business interruption claim. Negotiated a considerable settlement after substantially successful motions practice.
    • Successfully represented a global pharmaceutical company in precedent-setting appeals concerning first-party coverage for damage caused by an international cyber event.

    Complex Third-Party Claims

    • Representing the National Football League in litigation and appeals concerning insurance coverage for the League’s defense and settlement of concussion-related claims of former professional football players.
    • Coverage counsel to Duke University in numerous matters, including obtaining substantial insurance recoveries for multiple antitrust class action lawsuits through a combination of targeted negotiations, lawsuits, and summary judgment victories.
    • Representing National Amusements and Shari Redstone in D&O coverage lawsuits arising from the 2019 merger of Viacom and CBS.
    • Representing major utility provider in appeals concerning insurance coverage for environmental cleanup.

    Pro Bono

    • Fought for veterans in successful disability benefits appeals and discharge upgrade petitions.
    • Represented voting rights organizations in federal court in constitutional and statutory challenges to Florida voter suppression laws.
    • Lead counsel for whistleblower retaliation appeal before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
    • Secured public access to judicial records on behalf of policyholder advocacy group.
