LOS ANGELES—Kate Kraus joined Covington’s Los Angeles office today as a partner in the firm’s Tax Practice.
Kate is one of the country’s leading authorities on partnership tax, including the “BBA” rules that govern partnership audits, and she has more than 20 years of experience in tax planning, providing transactional advice, and representing taxpayers in tax controversies. She advises on the tax issues that arise in a wide range of partnership, corporate, and real estate matters, including joint ventures, fund formations, financing transactions, mergers and acquisitions, liquidations, restructurings, debt workouts, and bankruptcies. Kate also represents clients in federal and state tax controversies and assists them in obtaining an efficient resolution of their tax disputes. Her clients include REITs, large institutional investors, real estate funds, private equity funds, hedge funds, Fortune 100 companies, closely held companies, and Opportunity Zone funds. Kate is the author of the Bloomberg Tax Management Portfolio, The Partnership Audit Rules Under the Bipartisan Budget Act, and she is the co-Chair of the Practicing Law Institute’s Understanding the BBA Partnership Audit Rules conference.

Kate graduated from The University of Chicago Law School, received her Ph.D. from Princeton University, and earned her B.A. from Wellesley College. Kate also clerked for Judge Easterbrook of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit.
