SAN FRANCISCO—The Daily Journal has named Covington partners Kurt Calia and Clara Shin to its 2020 list of the “Top Intellectual Property Lawyers” in California.
Mr. Calia is a partner in our Palo Alto office who tries complex civil litigation and intellectual property matters in courts and tribunals throughout the country, and counsels clients in intellectual property matters. His practice focuses on the firm's technology clients, ranging from pharmaceutical chemistry, biotechnology, and biomedical devices, to mechanical devices, business methods, microprocessors, and software. In its profile, Daily Journal highlights his successful representation at trial of an Israeli defense contractor, Elbit Systems, in its patent infringement claims again U.S. rival, Hughes Network Systems LLC, concerning satellite communications equipment.
Ms. Shin is a partner in our San Francisco office and is a first-chair trial lawyer who specializes in intellectual property and complex commercial disputes. She co-chairs the firm’s Commercial Litigation Practice Group. Clients frequently call on Ms. Shin in late stages of litigation to take matters to trial or reorient the strategic direction of a case - in the last three years, she obtained complete wins valued at nearly $2.5 billion, in each instance taking over from prior counsel and rebuilding the defense strategy. Ms. Shin's representative matters include substituting in as counsel for Eli Lilly nine months before the arbitration hearing and obtaining a dismissal of all trade secrets, fraud, and breach of contract claims valued at $1.8 billion, which the Daily Journal highlights in its profile; substituting in as counsel for Dropbox, Inc. five months before trial and winning summary judgment in a trademark suit where the damages exposure exceeded $100 million; substituting in as counsel for McKesson five months before trial and winning a complete defense verdict in a trade secrets trial with $500 million at stake.
