Former Senior Advisor to California AG Joins Covington

February 8, 2017

LOS ANGELESMónica Ramírez Almadani has joined Covington in the firm’s Litigation and White Collar Defense and Investigations practices in Los Angeles. Ms. Almadani most recently served as Special Assistant Attorney General in the California Department of Justice, where she acted as a senior advisor to former California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris.

As a member of the California Attorney General’s senior management team, Ms. Almadani oversaw significant criminal investigations and civil enforcement actions, including cases involving public corruption and financial fraud brought by the Financial Fraud and Special Prosecutions Section. She also regularly advised the Attorney General on the most sensitive legal questions facing the State of California, and helped the Attorney General formulate and implement enforcement priorities for the Department’s Civil Rights Division and Criminal Division.

Ms. Almadani held several positions in the United States Department of Justice before joining Attorney General Harris’s leadership team. She  worked as a federal prosecutor in the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, where she first-chaired several trials to verdict and argued several appeals before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Ms. Almadani also served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Counsel to Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole and as Counsel to Assistant Attorney General Thomas E. Perez in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

“Mónica adds significant depth and strength to our growing White Collar and Litigation practices on the West Coast. She is an exceptional courtroom advocate and litigator, and has a well-earned reputation as a trusted advisor,” said James Garland, co-chair of Covington’s White Collar Defense and Investigations Practice. “Her expertise and counsel will be a tremendous benefit to a wide range of the firm’s clients.”

Ms. Almadani earned her A.B. from Harvard University and her J.D. from Stanford Law School. Following law school, she clerked for Judge Warren Ferguson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

“I’m very pleased to join Covington’s Litigation and White Collar practices in Los Angeles, and it is a pleasure to be reunited with so many of my colleagues from the Department of Justice,” said Ms. Almadani. “The firm’s Litigation and White Collar practices have always been distinguished by two features: the quality of the firm’s lawyers, and the complexity of the investigations, enforcement actions, and litigation that they handle, and I look forward to growing these practices in California.”

One of the largest practices in the world, Covington’s white collar and investigations team includes the former Attorney General of the United States, three former heads of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, a former Secretary of Homeland Security, former senior SEC officials, numerous former federal prosecutors with extensive criminal trial experience, as well as former senior Treasury Department, State Department, and EU officials.
