Haywood Gilliam Confirmed as Federal Judge

December 17, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO, December 17, 2014 — The U.S. Senate on Tuesday confirmed Covington & Burling partner Haywood S. Gilliam, Jr. to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

“We are very proud that President Obama nominated Haywood to the federal bench in Northern California and that the Senate has now confirmed his nomination,” said Timothy Hester, chair of the firm’s management committee. “It is a wonderful tribute to Haywood’s great strengths as a lawyer and as a person, and we are confident that he will serve the nation with great distinction.”

“I am grateful to have been confirmed by the Senate, and deeply honored by the opportunity to serve the people of our district alongside my new colleagues on the bench,” Mr. Gilliam said.

Mr. Gilliam, a partner in Covington’s San Francisco office, was a vice-chair of the firm’s white collar defense and investigations practice and a member of its securities litigation and enforcement practice. He began his career as a law clerk to Judge Thelton E. Henderson of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and served as a federal prosecutor for nearly eight years. From 2004 to 2006, Mr. Gilliam served as the chief of the Securities Fraud Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco.
