Brussels, 27 October, 2014 — Covington & Burling is pleased to announce that Andrea Zulli is joining the firm’s EU competition group. Mr. Zulli was previously head of the Italian antitrust and competition group at a leading international practice. Mr. Zulli will be resident in the firm’s Brussels office, and will play an important role in the firm’s EU competition practice, in particular with regard to the life sciences sector.
Mr. Zulli advises clients in relation to all aspects of EU, international and Italian competition law, including merger control, cartels and other restrictive practices, antitrust compliance, and abuses of a dominant position. In particular, he has represented major international businesses in relation to merger control notifications to the EU, Italian and other national competition authorities, and has defended major international companies in a number of cartel investigations and other behavioural matters.
Recognised as a top competition lawyer by GCR, Chambers Europe, Legal 500 EMEA and LMG Life Sciences, Mr. Zulli has an extensive knowledge of a variety of sectors including life sciences, financial services (with a particular focus on private equity and venture capital) and consumer & luxury goods.
Peter Bogaert, managing partner of Covington’s Brussels office, noted: “The pharmaceutical industry continues to face a very specific set of challenges at the cross-section of competition, regulatory and IP law, and is also undergoing a new global consolidation wave, which raises complex merger control issues. Andrea brings a wealth of competition experience that deepens our expertise in these areas that are vitally important to our global clients.”
“I have known - and worked with - Andrea for over a decade. He is a first rate lawyer who brings an immense amount of experience across a range of industries and particularly in the life sciences sector,” said Johan Ysewyn, head of the Covington’s EU competition practice. “His expertise is an obvious fit with Covington’s established reputation in the pharmaceutical industry, and further strengthens our highly regarded EU competition practice in Brussels.”
Thomas Barnett and Deborah Garza, chairs of Covington’s global antitrust and competition law practice group, commented: “The life sciences industry is truly global in its reach, which creates many challenges for our clients in many corners of the world. EU competition is a crucial piece of the puzzle, and we are thrilled to be strengthening the Brussels-based team that already counts 6 partners and counsel and a number of talented associates.”
Mr. Zulli added: “The global standing of the firm, and particularly of its leading regulatory practices, is a tremendous draw for me. The firm has a top tier global antitrust practice, including an exciting proposition in Europe, and I am very much looking forward to being part of the team.”
Andrea holds an LL.M. in EU and Competition Law from the University of Stockholm and a J.D. from L.U.I.S.S. University in Rome. He is an Italian avvocato, admitted to the Rome Bar, and a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales.
Covington’s global antitrust practice is widely recognised for its excellence, including rankings in Chambers Europe, Chambers USA, Legal 500 EMEA and GCR100.
