Brussels, 19 December, 2013 — Covington & Burling is pleased to announce that Adem Koyuncu is joining its life sciences practice as a partner, along with associate Sabine Stute. Dr. Koyuncu and Ms. Stute will be resident in the firm’s Brussels office, and will focus on issues involving the law of the European Union and, in particular, of Germany.

Dr. Koyuncu, who is qualified as both a lawyer and medical doctor, has a substantial life sciences practice that focuses on EU and German law regulatory issues pertaining to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other health and consumer products. His practice also involves compliance, privacy, and product liability matters, and he has also assisted life sciences clients on corporate transactions and IPOs. Dr. Koyuncu is consistently ranked in national and international surveys of leading life sciences lawyers.

Most recently, Dr. Koyuncu was partner and co-chair of the global life sciences group of another international law firm. Prior to joining private practice, he worked in the pharmaceutical industry for several years, and before that practised as a medical doctor.

“Our Brussels office serves as a hub for advising clients on national and pan-European life sciences matters across the entire European Union,” said Timothy Hester, Covington’s chairman. “Dr. Koyuncu’s arrival significantly strengthens our ability to advise a broad range of clients in the pharmaceuticals and medical devices industries on matters in Germany, the EU and Europe.”

“Dr. Koyuncu’s arrival is a significant development for our global life sciences team,” said Peter Bogaert, managing partner of Covington’s Brussels office and a partner in the firm’s life sciences practice. “Dr. Koyuncu’s extensive experience in the pan-European and German markets will undoubtedly be welcomed by many of our clients. Covington is the legal and strategic advisor of choice for the life sciences industry worldwide, providing deep knowledge and expertise on the full life cycle of issues facing the sector.”

“I am delighted to be joining Covington’s preeminent life sciences team,” said Dr. Koyuncu. “Covington’s commitment to the innovative life sciences industry and strategic vision for the group are just two of the many reasons why I feel this is the right fit for my clients and practice.” At Covington, which he will join effective, January 1, 2014, Dr. Koyuncu will head the firm’s German life sciences practice and will be a member of the firm's compliance practice.

Dr. Koyuncu earned his law and medical degrees from the University of Cologne. He is a member of the regulatory Ethics Committee (Institutional Review Board) of the University of Dresden, and recently acted as an expert in a public hearing on medical devices law before the German Federal Parliament’s health committee. Dr. Koyuncu is fluent in English, German, and Turkish.

Dr. Koyuncu is admitted to the Bar in Düsseldorf, and Ms. Stute in Cologne, Germany. Both lawyers are licensed to practice in Germany and will be in Belgium in January.

Covington is widely recognised as a leading life sciences firm with rankings in Chambers Global, Chambers UK, Chambers Europe, Chambers USA, Chambers Asia, Legal 500 UK, Legal 500 EMEA and Legal 500 USA.
