Covington Co-Hosts Program on Cyber Espionage

WASHINGTON, DC, September 27, 2013 — Covington & Burling and George Washington University’s Cybersecurity Initiative yesterday co-hosted a program that examined the growing threat of economic and cyber espionage and the need to protect trade secrets.

In conjunction with the event, Covington and GW’s Cybersecurity Initiative released an issue brief on the legal landscape and global trade-related implications of economic espionage, as well as recommended responses for the private sector and the use of trade policy tools.

Former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff; former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn, III; and Stan McCoy, assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Intellectual Property and Innovation addressed the findings of the issue brief. Mr. Chertoff is senior of counsel at Covington and chairman and founder of The Chertoff Group.

The program also featured moderator Frank Cilluffo, associate vice president of The George Washington University and Director of Homeland Security Policy Institute, and a panel discussion among the authors of the issue brief, including the following Covington lawyers: David Fagan (cyber security); former Ambassador and Deputy U.S. Trade Representative John Veroneau (international trade); Kurt Calia (IP planning and litigation); Gina Vetere (trade policy); and Kristen Eichensehr (cyber security).
