Covington Hosts Chinese Children at Expo

November 5, 2010

BEIJING, November 5, 2010 — As the 2010 Shanghai World Expo drew to a close, Covington & Burling LLP hosted a group of disabled Chinese orphans at the Expo for a memorable day of Expo pavilion visits and other activities. The children hailed from social welfare institutions located in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, and ranged in age from 7 to 23. Covington coordinated the event in conjunction with the Half the Sky Foundation, a US-based non-profit organization that works with children's welfare institutions throughout China to develop programs for the care and education of Chinese orphans.

The children visited the USA, UK and Korea Pavilions, and had lunch at the USA Pavilion. The visit to the Expo represented a rare treat for the children, few of whom had ever visited Shanghai, much less had an opportunity to experience other cultures or a global media event.

Wang Li, Associate Director of Youth Services Program of the Half the Sky Foundation, remarked, “This is a very significant event. The program was well- arranged. We appreciate all that Covington has done for the children.”

“We are proud and pleased to have been able to host these children at the Expo,” said Ellen Eliasoph, managing partner of Covington’s Beijing office and co-founder of the USA Pavilion. “We trust that their visit to the Expo will become one of their warmest and most cherished memories.”

Covington has a strong commitment to social responsibility. The firm encourages all of its lawyers to participate in pro bono work, and devotes significant resources to finding pro bono projects that reflect the diverse interests of its lawyers. The American Lawyer has ranked Covington at or near the top of its annual pro bono survey for the past 18 years.

Covington was a sponsor of and the official legal services provider to the USA Pavilion at the just-ended Shanghai World Expo, which ran from May 1 to October 31, 2010. More than 250 countries and international organizations participated and the event garnered attendance of 73 million, making this the largest World Expo in history.
