REDWOOD SHORES, CA, October 12, 2010 — Covington & Burling LLP partner Kurt Calia received the Boston University School of Law Victor J. Garo Public Service Award.
Mr. Calia, a partner in Covington’s intellectual property litigation, technology, and life sciences practices, was honored for his representation of a death-row inmate in Alabama, a political asylum case for Sudanese lawyer, and numerous clients in constitutional challenges to the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, Michigan’s Legal Birth Definition Act, and New Hampshire’s Parental Notification Act, among others. In accepting his award, Mr. Calia noted that his pro bono cases have been “some of the most meaningful, gratifying work imaginable,” and that the award “is truly a team award as Covington has been so supportive of my pro bono endeavors over the years.”
The Victor J. Garo Public Service Award is presented each fall to a Boston University graduate who has demonstrated an exceptional and long-standing commitment to pro bono work.
