Washington Business Journal Names Covington’s Zern to ‘40 Under 40’

September 8, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC, September 8, 2010 — Covington & Burling LLP partner Peter Zern has been named to Washington Business Journal’s “40 Under 40.” The list recognizes the Washington region's brightest young business leaders based on demonstrated business success.

At Covington, Mr. Zern advises many of the firm’s sports clients on media transactions, finance, and mergers and acquisitions. He has played a leading role in three of the biggest sports deals announced this year. In April, Mr. Zern advised Turner Broadcasting on a $10.8 billion, 14-year television and new media rights agreement with the NCAA and CBS Sports to present the Division 1 Men’s Basketball Championship. In July, he led the Covington team that represented Christopher Cohan in the sale of the Golden State Warriors. At a purchase price of $450 million, it is a record price for a NBA team. Most recently, Mr. Zern advised the NFL in connection with the pending sale of the St. Louis Rams.

The Covington sports transactions group is led in the US by Bruce Wilson, Doug Gibson, and Mr. Zern. Other matters the group has handled in 2010 include representing the NFL in its groundbreaking sponsorship and content deal with Verizon Wireless, advising the National Hockey League in the sale of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and representing the Independent Advisory Committee of the U.S. Olympic Committee, chaired by Covington’s Paul Tagliabue, in its assessment of the board structure and operations model of the USOC.

Mr. Zern will be honored at an awards ceremony to be held on October 28 in Washington.
