SAN FRANCISCO, September 2, 2010 — Insurance Law360 has named Covington & Burling LLP partner Donald Brown one of the “Most Admired Insurance Attorneys.” The list of ten attorneys from all over the U.S., including some representing insurance companies and others representing policy holders, was selected by a board comprised of lawyers and the editors of Law360 from hundreds of nominations submitted by lawyers at peer firms.
In a profile of Mr. Brown published August 31, the editors highlight his trial successes, noting that he has “set the standard by which insurance policyholder attorneys are judged.” In one such trial, involving insurance coverage for environmental cleanup costs, Mr. Brown led a team of 80 attorneys representing ExxonMobil Corp. and its Canadian subsidiary. Mr. Brown delivered his opening statement, which consumed the entire first day of trial, only to have the trial come to an abrupt end when that night the lead insurer trying the case agreed to settle. The profile quotes colleagues at other law firms who describe Mr. Brown as “top-notch counsel,” who consistently brings an “all star team” to the table. In particular, one colleague says “when Brown’s name appears on the docket, it sends a signal to insurers.”
The Law360 profile also highlights Mr. Brown’s position as managing partner of the San Francisco office.
Covington's insurance practice, comprised of approximately 100 lawyers in California, London, New York, and Washington, DC, has been ranked the number one practice in the country by Chambers USA and Legal 500. Additionally, the practice has been given the Award for Excellence from Chambers USA for the past two years.
