Covington’s Wimmer Receives First Amendment Award

May 26, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC, May 26, 2010 — Covington & Burling LLP partner Kurt Wimmer received the First Amendment Award from The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press last night during its 40th Anniversary Gala held at Cipriani in New York. Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, and “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl also were recipients of the award.

Mr. Wimmer, a communications and media partner who has practiced for more than 20 years at Covington, was honored for his work in representing top media companies and associations, for his work in more than two dozen countries on new media laws, protection of journalists, and freedom of information, and for taking the lead in 2009 in an unprecedented and successful negotiation with the Obama White House over acceptable language for a federal shield law.

The Reporters Committee is an Arlington, Va.-based non-profit organization that provides legal defense and advocacy assistance for journalists working in the United States. For more than 40 years, it has helped thousands of reporters quash subpoenas seeking information about confidential sources, secured pro bono legal counsel for reporters facing libel accusations, and helped reporters navigate a host of state and federal open government laws.
