SportsBusiness Journal Again Names Covington’s Zern to ‘Forty Under 40’


WASHINGTON, DC, March 27, 2009 — For the second straight year, Covington & Burling LLP partner Peter Zern has been named to Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal’s “Forty Under 40.” The 10th annual list honors the best and brightest executives in the sports business industry under the age of 40, and is described by the publication as the most coveted award in sports business.

In its March 23 cover story, the magazine recognizes Mr. Zern for his work with Major League Baseball, NASCAR, the National Hockey League and the National Football League. The editors write that as one of the principal outside attorneys for the NFL, Mr. Zern has been “in the thick of serious and complex talks revolving around weighty financial issues.” The profile also highlights the role Mr. Zern played for the NFL in negotiating and drafting the agreement which led to the end of 2008’s “Spygate” scandal.

At Covington, Mr. Zern advises many of the firm’s sports clients on media, finance and other sports-industry transactions. He has played a leading role in the financing and construction of more than a half-dozen NFL stadiums, including new stadiums for the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants/Jets joint venture. He has advised Major League Baseball in negotiations for the distribution of the recently launched MLB Network, represented NASCAR in its television and new media distribution rights, and has worked with the NHL on NHL Network equity negotiations.

Mr. Zern and the “Forty Under 40” Class of 2009 will be honored April 3 at an awards banquet being held at the Mandarin Oriental in Miami.
