Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue Rejoins Covington

WASHINGTON, DC, December 3, 2007 — Covington & Burling LLP is pleased to announce that Paul Tagliabue, most recently the National Football League’s Commissioner and previously a Covington partner, is rejoining the firm as senior of counsel effective December 1st. Mr. Tagliabue will serve in the firm’s Washington, DC and New York offices, and will advise clients on strategic matters in the communications/media, technology and international sectors.

In addition to his role at Covington, Mr. Tagliabue will continue as a business advisor to the NFL and will be involved in other business, educational and personal interests.

Mr. Tagliabue served with distinction as NFL Commissioner from 1989 until 2006 and presided over an extended period of labor peace and revenue growth in professional football. During his tenure, the League grew from 28 to 32 teams, secured the largest television contracts in entertainment history, supported the construction of more than 20 NFL team stadiums, and expanded the NFL’s global reach.

Before becoming the NFL's CEO, Mr. Tagliabue represented the League and a wide range of other clients for two decades at Covington & Burling, where he served on the firm's Management Committee and actively participated in the firm's international expansion.

Stuart Stock, chair of the firm’s management committee, commented: “We are very pleased that Paul has chosen to return to the firm. He has been considering a wide array of opportunities. The standard that Paul set at the NFL allowed a very broad audience to appreciate his gifts both as a person and as a leader.”

Mr. Tagliabue stated: “I am delighted to rejoin Covington, and excited about working with former colleagues and the many talented lawyers who have joined the firm in the past two decades. They have continued the firm’s extraordinary traditions while expanding the firm’s practice and client base in many areas, including those driven by technology and business innovation.”

"Paul's energy and perspective will be available not only in our New York and Washington offices but also in our international practice,” said Tim Hester, chair-elect of Covington's management committee. "His judgment and decades of business and legal experience will be very valuable to many of our clients especially on complex and strategic transactions."

Since stepping down as NFL Commissioner in September 2006, Mr. Tagliabue has been serving on the Georgetown University board of directors where he is a member of the Board’s executive committee and involved with Medical Center affairs. He also chairs the board of the Graduate Institute of International Relations and Commerce of the State University of New York (SUNY) in Manhattan, serves on the boards of a number of not-for-profits, and is a member of the Council for Foreign Relations.
