EDNY focusing “more than ever” on national security cases, outgoing criminal division chief says
July 15, 2024, Global Investigations Review
Global Investigations Review covered Kristin Mace’s Covington arrival in an article about her experience at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York as its former criminal division chief and the EDNY’s increasing focus on national security.
“Now, I think, more than ever, the department is focused on matters and issues that have a national security aspect,” Kristin said.
She said such cases involved working with the DOJ’s national security division and often related to export control or sanctions violations.
“Different types of corporate matters and corporate investigations now can have a national security aspect,” Kristin said. “When I was [chief], we absolutely focused on those types of issues and had a large proportion of the export control and sanctions cases in the country.”
She said the office also worked on multiple other fronts, including business and securities fraud, violent crime, and civil rights cases. Counterterrorism has “always been and always will be” a priority in New York City, Kristin said, adding that the city’s placement as a major global financial hub makes it an important location to prosecute financial crimes.
Kristin also said that she is looking forward to drawing on her experience in EDNY in her new role at Covington, saying ““I think [national security] is an area that is definitely important now, and important to clients. I think Covington is the lead in the white-collar space [and] especially in international matters.” “So my experience in EDNY and the types of cases I have the opportunity to work on will really help contribute,” she added.
