Experts: Legal Noise Around SEC Climate Rule No Excuse for Standing Still

Megan Gates’ commentary was included a Compliance Week article covering how public companies should prepare for the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) new climate-related disclosure rule. Megan advised companies to move forward with efforts to comply with the new rule despite challenges being brought against it.

Megan argued that “we think it’s a better approach to prepare for the [SEC climate disclosure] rule to take effect. It’s not a great approach to wait and see, if that means not doing anything.” She further advised companies, “If you’ve made (goals), then you’ve got to keep going.” Most companies that make sustainability or carbon-neutral promises have processes in place to monitor progress, but those processes also must be brough under the climate-related disclosure umbrella, she said.
