Nick Xenakis’s commentary was included in a Legaltech News article examining the Biden administration’s new executive order regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and the future of AI regulations in the United States. Nick commented on how this executive order will affect the industry.
Nick notes that “the most important thing is, what happens next? These doors have been opened, everybody has been given direction, but a lot of the important work happens now in getting people to engage about how this is going to work. There was a lot of tasking in the order.” In addition, the executive order “incorporates a lot of other things as well, not only kind of these reporting requirements and the nature of red-teaming and how that’s going to play out with all of this, but also the definition of a dual-use foundation model,” Nick said.
Nick explained further that “the Department of Commerce was obviously given quite a bit of authority in the order. I think that’s important. In many ways they seem to be able to set apart as the lead agency for a lot of this.” He added that the agency already has a structure in place that is best-suited to handle these types of processes, which makes it “well-positioned to move forward” with these new duties.
