Deepti Kulkarni spoke with Law360 in a Q&A about joining Covington as a partner in the firm's Food, Drug, and Device practice.
Deepti said she was drawn to Covington in large part because of the firm's collaborative culture and multidisciplinary approach to serving the needs of clients. "And as a food and drug lawyer," she added, "I am incredibly excited to bring that breadth and depth to serve the broad and very dynamic needs of clients in this space. And I'm excited to do that with a team of lawyers as talented and hardworking and committed as those that are here."
When asked what she brings to Covington from her experience working inside the FDA for many years, Deepti responded, "I draw from that experience at the FDA in advising clients and navigating complex regulatory frameworks, understanding the compliance landscape and setting their own priorities to meet their commercialization goals."
Deepti explained how technology and innovators making food and animal products contribute to the many ways in which the landscape of food and drug regulation has changed in the last five years. "Innovators and innovative companies are making advancements in technology and also in their infrastructure to solve what are some of the world's most pressing challenges," she continued. "In addition, there are complexities with respect to our better understanding of the human body, of animal health, of the connection between what we eat and our health, what we grow and our health. And so we're seeing these complex issues also affect food and drug regulation."
"My practice focuses on animal products and food products for humans," she added. "And so we're seeing food and drug regulation, having to be interpreted and adapted to address these new technologies in a way that assures that products are safe and appropriate."
