At Covington, we recognize differences as an asset and look to recruit, retain, develop, and promote a diverse group of lawyers. As part of our commitment to this, the London Diversity Committee recently held an Insight Day for 15 students affiliated with Urban Lawyers, an organization seeking to make the law more accessible to marginalized groups. Students from various stages in their legal careers—undergraduates, graduates working as paralegals, and others currently working in non-legal industries—joined us for a program designed to provide insight into life as a Covington lawyer and essential skills sessions for legal recruitment processes.
The day consisted of a welcome talk, practice overview sessions, opportunities to network with fee earners, a commercial/legal problem question workshop, mock interviews, and an interview/CV skills workshop. The mock interview sessions were particularly well received—frank discussions were had about the barriers that some students have experienced at interviews and possible responses to challenging interview questions.
We gained valuable feedback from the event and plan to develop the program further for future Insight Days.
