Covington lawyers and members of the Latino Affinity Group José Arvelo and Anna Nuñez attended the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund's (MALDEF) 2018 Washington, DC Awards Gala at the Mayflower Hotel. Covington proudly served as a sponsor of the event. As one of the nation’s leading Latino legal civil rights organizations, MALDEF promotes social change in the areas of education, employment, immigrant rights, and political access through advocacy, education, and litigation.
At this year’s gala, Claudia Curiel, journalist from Telemundo DC, was the Master of Ceremonies, and The Honorable Luis Gutiérrez, Congressman for Chicago's 4th District, was the keynote speaker. The honorees included Brent A. Wilkes, former Chief Executive Officer for the League of United Latin American Citizens, who received a Lifetime Achievement Excellence in Community Service Award; María Elena Salinas, an independent journalist and producer and former news anchor at Univision, who received a Lifetime Achievement Excellence in Community Service Award; and Emilio González, Executive Director for Public Policy and Strategic Alliances at Verizon, who received a Corporate Social Responsibility Award.
The gala was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the significant accomplishments and impact of these prominent Latinos and to support MALDEF's important work advancing civil rights for Latinos in America.
