On May 2-3, 2017, Covington lawyers participated in the ABA Section of Litigation Inaugural LGBT Forum in San Francisco. Covington was a lead sponsor of the event, which provided an opportunity for LGBT lawyers from across the country to network and attend discussions on topics including LGBT rights and religious exemption claims, transgender rights, family law for LGBT families (including custody and adoption issues), and how to create an inclusive workplace.
Covington partner D. Jean Veta spoke on a panel entitled, "Advice to My Younger Self: Overcoming Historical Bias Against Out Litigators." Along with the other panelists, Ms. Veta spoke about the importance of working in an accepting environment and being your true self with clients, who are more concerned that their lawyer is honest and effective than what their sexual orientation may be.
Also at the event, state Rep. Brian Sims of Pennsylvania, speaking on a panel with former Gov. Howard Dean of Vermont, urged young people to run for local office and make a difference in their towns, cities, and statehouses. He said that by building alliances with Republican lawmakers, he has been able to prevent anti-LGBT legislation from passing in his state and has secured rights for LGBT citizens of Pennsylvania.
