As leading Chinese companies seek out growth opportunities overseas, including in Latin America and Africa, they must manage increasingly complex risks, both commercial and political in nature. Business partners may begin to neglect their contractual obligations. Local governments can grow less welcoming over time. Emerging economies in Latin America and Africa present particularly unique challenges given their social and political environments. Managing these risks requires a strategic understanding of the local culture, international law, and arbitration.
Tim Stratford and Miguel López Forastier from Covington & Burling LLP and Zhong Lun Law Firm, two global law firms deeply experienced in resolving cross-border disputes, invite relevant Chinese companies and investors to learn about their expertise and to share your own questions and concerns. Potential topics will include the primary risks of investing in Latin America and Africa; contractual, legal, and policy tools that Chinese companies can use to mitigate those risks; and war stories on success in commercial arbitration and investment-treaty arbitration cases. Attendees will learn practical solutions for managing commercial and political risks affecting their foreign investments, gain strategic insights into real cases, and exchange ideas with both leading experts and representatives from peer companies.
