Assignments and Mentoring

Each of our summer associates is assigned both an associate mentor and partner advisor, who monitor work assignments and provide insights into life at Covington’s Los Angeles office. We pride ourselves on providing summer associates with constructive feedback on their work over the course of the summer, both through informal evaluations and discussion of projects with individual lawyers on a day-to-day basis and by a more formal review and end-of-summer exit interview process. We believe that the smaller scale of the Los Angeles program helps ensure that each summer associate gets a real chance to work closely with multiple partners and associates and to receive the kind of individual attention that is often key to a successful summer associate experience.

Education and Training

Our summer associate program aims to provide a select group of top law students with an accurate picture of what it is like to be an associate in Covington’s Los Angeles office. Summer associates have significant responsibility and regularly attend client and internal strategy meetings, depositions, transaction negotiations and closings, settlement negotiations, and court hearings. Our summer associates also participate in regular corporate and litigation training programs and meet frequently with partners and associates to discuss current matters of interest within each practice group.

Events

The summer program, while full of extraordinary professional opportunities, is not all work. The important social component of our program ensures that our summer associates get to know our lawyers and our beautiful city through a range of fun and exciting activities.

We pride ourselves on providing summer associates with constructive feedback on their work throughout the summer. We also help summer associates develop their writing, research, and advocacy skills as the summer progresses.

Educational Programs and Training

Covington’s commitment to educating and training new lawyers begins with the summer program. Summer associates participate in our intensive, hands-on deposition and negotiation skills training programs. Summer associates also attend luncheons that focus on various aspects of the firm’s management, practice groups, pro bono work, and such practical issues as career guidance and professional development. Summer associates are also invited to participate in the “Lawyers in Action” program, where attorneys bring summer associates to court proceedings, oral arguments, depositions, closings, congressional hearings, and client meetings.

Social Events

The summer program, while full of extraordinary professional opportunities, is not all work. A wide variety of social events enables summer associates to get to know the firm’s lawyers in more relaxed settings. We also offer a range of events featuring the many wonderful cultural and recreational resources the nation's capital has to offer. Highlights from previous summer programs include wine and whiskey tastings, movie night, weekly softball games with the “Hurling Burlings,” Bubble Ball, Top Golf, concerts, and Nationals baseball games.
