Henry Liu is a litigator in the firm’s Washington office. Mr. Liu specializes in defending financial institutions and other corporate clients in high stakes class actions involving antitrust and consumer protection claims. He has extensive experience representing clients who face claims in complex class action MDL proceedings. Many of those matters were successfully resolved through pre-trial motions.

  • Counsel to a leading financial institution in MDL antitrust litigation involving U.S. Treasury securities. See In re Treasury Securities Auction Antitrust Litigation (S.D.N.Y.).
  • Counsel to a leading investment bank in a consolidated set of antitrust class actions involving zinc futures trading and zinc warehousing. The Court dismissed all claims against the bank. See In re Zinc Antitrust Litigation (S.D.N.Y.).
  • Counsel to a leading investment bank in MDL antitrust litigation involving aluminum futures trading and aluminum warehousing. See In re Aluminum Warehousing Antitrust Litigation (S.D.N.Y.).
  • Counsel to a major credit card issuer in class action litigation involving RICO and unfair trade practices claims. The Court dismissed all claims against the issuer. See In re Trilegiant Corporation (D. Conn.).
  • Counsel to the American Bankers Association in a challenge to the Volcker Rule provision of the Dodd-Frank Act. See American Bankers Association v. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (D.C. Cir.).
  • Counsel to a leading financial institution in class action litigation alleging bid rigging by purchasers of municipal tax liens. The Court dismissed all claims against three financial firms. See In re Tax Sales Certificates Antitrust Litigation (D.N.J. 2013).
  • Counsel to a national bank in a class action appeal in the Ninth Circuit relating to the posting order of debit-card transactions.
  • Counsel to a major credit card issuer in a wide variety of private class actions and state attorneys general actions involving antitrust, unfair and deceptive practices, RICO, FDCPA, FCRA, TILA, and other claims.

Pro Bono

  • Briefed and argued an appeal in the Ninth Circuit on behalf of a class of Filipino teachers who accused recruitment companies of demanding they pay massive processing and placement fees. The Ninth Circuit affirmed the jury’s $4.5 million award to the class. See Tanedo v. Universal Placement International (9th Cir. 2015).
  • Briefed and argued a federal habeas appeal before the Third Circuit on behalf of an inmate who had been incarcerated for over twenty years. The Third Circuit granted habeas relief and instructed that the inmate be released. See Alongi v. Ricci et. al (3d. Cir. 2010).
  • Lead trial counsel for several indigent defendants in criminal proceedings in the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County.
  • Represented a major civil rights organization and individual plaintiffs in various public accommodations lawsuits alleging race discrimination.
