Covington Once Again Achieves "Mansfield Rule Certification Plus" For Diversity
October 10, 2023
WASHINGTON—Covington has achieved "Mansfield Rule Certification 6.0 Plus," which reflects the firm’s dedication to actively diversifying leadership in the legal profession. Covington has achieved Mansfield Rule certification every year since The Diversity Lab, an incubator for ideas and solutions that boost diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in law, launched the pilot certification.
"DEI initiatives continue to be a key priority at Covington and achieving Mansfield Rule certification year after year is a reflection of our commitment," said Doug Gibson, Covington's chair. "The Management Committee, along with our DEI team, DEI Committee, and Affinity Group Leaders, are continuously monitoring our progress and further enhancing our programs and policies to foster an inclusive and equitable workplace."
"Mansfield Rule 6.0 Certification" requires law firms to consider at least 30% historically underrepresented lawyers – women lawyers, underrepresented racial and/or ethnic lawyers, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and/or lawyers with disabilities – when appointing to leadership roles, promoting to equity partnership, and more.
Covington belongs to a subset of firms achieving "Mansfield Certified Plus" designation. This category recognizes that, in addition to meeting or exceeding the consideration requirements for certification, women, lawyers of color, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities represent at least 30 percent of a significant number of firm leadership roles, committee positions, equity partner promotions, and formal client pitch opportunities.
