WASHINGTON—The American Lawyer has ranked Covington number one among U.S. law firms in its 2021 Pro Bono Scorecard. This is also the third year in a row that Covington has ranked first in average pro bono hours.
The American Lawyer scores each of the top 200 U.S. firms based on the average number of pro bono hours for U.S.-based lawyers in 2020 and the percentage of lawyers handling at least 20 hours. Covington’s U.S. lawyers averaged 177.8 pro bono hours per lawyer, and 85.2% of its lawyers completed 20 or more pro bono hours.
“We are proud that our lawyers continue to maintain the firm's deep-seated commitment to providing pro bono services to those in need,” said Doug Gibson, Covington’s chair. “These efforts are particularly important in the current environment, so that we can help address the challenges of a global pandemic for society's most vulnerable, promote social change, and protect fundamental rights and freedoms.”
Since its founding in 1919, Covington has maintained a strong commitment to public service. The firm encourages all of its lawyers to participate in pro bono work, and devotes significant resources to finding pro bono projects that reflect the diverse interests of its lawyers.
