In an article discussing the global footprint of international law, Law.com cites the Covington team representing Ukraine pro bono in a case against Russia in the International Court of Justice, which argued that Russia’s stated justification for the invasion was false and unfounded.
At Ukraine’s request, the International Court of Justice issued its decision ordering Russia to immediately suspend its military operation in Ukraine; although the binding ruling is perceived as largely symbolic because the top U.N. court has no enforcement powers, Law.com quoted Marney Cheek explaining why it matters.
“The Russian invasion of Ukraine under the false pretext of preventing and punishing genocide is a threat not just to Ukraine but to the international legal order as we know it,” Marney expressed.
