Covington attorney Michael Nonaka attended the 27th Annual Sadie T.M. Alexander conference hosted by the Penn Law Black Law Students Association. Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander was, among many achievements, the first African American woman to graduate from Penn Law and the first African American woman to practice law in Pennsylvania.
The conference was held at Penn Law and Hotel Monaco in Philadelphia. The theme for this year’s conference was “Current Applications of the Fourteenth Amendment” and explored the role that the amendment and the Equal Protection Clause in particular play in the black community. Cornell William Brooks, President and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was the keynote speaker.
Mike commented: “Reverend Brooks’ keynote address was a powerful reminder of the troubling issues our country currently faces and the role that the 14th amendment plays in our society.”
