Implications of the CJEU decision in the IAB Europe Case

On March 7, 2024, the EU Court of Justice rendered its decision in the IAB Europe case. The case relates to IAB Europe’s role in its Transparency and Consent Framework, a framework widely used in digital advertising, including real time bidding scenarios. In particular, the Court decided on the nature of TC Strings, the digital recording of a user’s choice (e.g., consent) as personal data. It also decided on the role of IAB Europe, as a sector organization.
