Book Talk with Harold Koh on "The Trump Administration and International Law"

Date: Thursday, January 24, 2019 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Venue: Covington and Burling LLP, Washington, DC

Please join Covington and Burling and the Washington Foreign Law Society for an engaging discussion with Yale Law School Professor Harold Hongju Koh, on his new book, "The Trump Administration and International Law." Harold will discuss the interactions between President Trump’s foreign policy and international law, as surveyed in his book. Partner and co-chair of Covington's International Arbitration practice, Marney Cheek, will moderate.

How will international law inform and constrain U.S. foreign policy in the Trump era? Since the Trump Administration took office, this question has touched almost every issue area of international law. Professor Koh argues that the pervasive "transnational legal process" that governs these issue areas continues to play an important role in shaping U.S. policymaking.

The book surveys immigration and refugee law, human rights, climate change, denuclearization, trade diplomacy, relations with North Korea, Russia, and Ukraine, America's "Forever War" against Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, and the ongoing tragedy in Syria. Professor Koh's tour d'horizon illustrates the many techniques that players in the transnational legal process have used to respond to President Trump's early initiatives
